Bertrand Léon
Master class
Rose that can age
This masterclass will introduce Château d’Esclans – a winery that redefines the rosé category and elevates it to the level of the world’s great wines. The history, terroir, and philosophy behind the creation of the wines will be presented through the concept of the “anatomy” of a great rosé – understanding every element that builds its structure and aging potential. Located in the heart of Provence, the estate rests on millennia of wine tradition, but the true transformation began in 2006, when Sacha Lichine set the ambitious goal of creating a rosé with the longevity and complexity of a great white Burgundy wine.
The foundation of this style lies in a deep understanding of the relationship between soil, climate, and human intervention. The limestone and clay soils in the La Motte area provide both structure and freshness, while the Mediterranean climate creates a balance between ripeness and acidity – a key factor for aging potential.
The philosophy behind the “birthplace” of great rosés will be presented by Bertrand Léon himself, accompanied by a tasting of:
Château d’esclans 2024
Château d’esclans 2022 Jeroboams
Les Clans 2022
Les Clans 2023
Les Clans 2024
Garrus 2022

24 April (Friday), from 5:00 PM to 6:15 PM
The masterclass will be conducted in English without translation.

Bertrand Léon is one of the leading figures in contemporary winemaking in Provence and a key driving force behind the style of Château d’Esclans, an iconic winery in the heart of Provence, world-renowned for producing some of the highest-quality rosés in the world, such as Whispering Angel, Garrus, Les Clans, and more. He graduated in agronomy in Bordeaux with a specialization in viticulture and enology and took on the role of Technical Director of the winery in 2011. As the son of the legendary winemaker Patrick Léon, Bertrand grew up in an environment shaped by some of the greatest names in modern winemaking. This experience became the foundation of his approach – a combination of deep respect for tradition and a drive for innovation. His work is distinguished by meticulous attention to detail, precision in every step of the process, and the ability to balance consistency with evolution. Undoubtedly, the market today offers many more rosés than when Sacha Lichine and Patrick Léon began creating the wines of Château d’Esclans in 2006. Bertrand’s commitment to consistency, combined with innovation, sustains and develops this renewed wine heritage.
